[Saba Sports News] According to British media reports, West Brom is contesting allegations of breaching the English Football League (EFL) Profitability and Sustainability (P&S) Rules. The club faces the risk of being deducted points after the season ends, which could see them relegated from the Championship. With the Championship season concluding on May 2, the EFL has little time left to hear West Brom’s case. The allegations relate to the club’s alleged violation of the £39 million loss limit over the three-year cycle ending in the 2024–25 season. Under EFL sanctions guidelines, any punishment for a P&S breach must be applied in the season following the violation — which, for West Brom, is the current campaign. However, the rulebook does not specify a clear deadline, leaving the definition of “when the season ends” unclear. The situation is further complicated by West Brom being embroiled in a Championship relegation battle. With only 4 rounds remaining, even a minor points deduction could send them down to League One.
The editor believes that there are alternative interpretations of when the season ends beyond the final round of league fixtures. These include the Championship play-off final on 23 May, or even the announcement of next season’s fixtures on 25 June. The latter has significant historical precedent, which could provide leeway for the EFL to conclude the case.
