[Saba Sports News] According to Crash.net, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff regrets how the intense championship battle between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg was handled between 2014 and 2016. This feud culminated in Rosberg’s abrupt retirement after winning his first world championship in 2016 and exposed the complexities of managing competition between two top drivers within a team. Now, as McLaren finds itself in the spotlight due to controversial team orders at the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, Wolff’s reflections have come back into focus. The report states that Wolff admitted Mercedes made mistakes in managing the driver competition in 2016. The team tried to control the situation by establishing strict rules but failed due to the unpredictable nature of motorsport. The championship is the result of collective team effort, but their attempt to create rules for all possible scenarios between the drivers backfired – because it was simply impossible to cover every situation. Wolff later realized that excessive intervention in the drivers’ competition actually intensified the conflict. This is a major regret from his early management career. However, different drivers have different personalities, making it difficult for outsiders to fully understand the dynamics between them.
