[Saba Sports News] Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey is expected to miss the start of the 2025-26 NBA season as he recovers from ankle surgery.
The 7-foot-4 big man re-sprained his left ankle during an offseason workout this week. Follow-up imaging revealed significant ligament looseness, prompting doctors to recommend a procedure to stabilize the joint.
“During an offseason training session this week, Edey re-sprained his left ankle. Imaging showed excessive ligamentous laxity that will require surgery to re-stabilize the ankle,” the team announced, adding that an initial recovery timeline will be set after the operation but that Edey is expected to make a full recovery.
Edey’s representatives believe surgery is the best long-term solution.
Selected ninth overall in last year’s draft, Edey played 66 games as a rookie—starting 55—and averaged 9.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks. He finished fifth in Rookie of the Year voting and earned All-Rookie honors.
Memphis went 48-34, claimed the West’s eighth seed, and was swept by Oklahoma City in the first round. The team now faces the season’s opening stretch without its promising young center.
