Mumbai Indians finished
fourth in the league stage of play previous season with eight victories from 14
games. They defeated the Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 but defeated the Lucknow
Super Giants in the Eliminator.
It is possible that Suryakumar Yadav will not be ready for Mumbai’s opening
match. In the previous three months, he underwent surgery for a sports hernia
and an ankle problem. He is currently receiving rehabilitation at the National
Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.
Due to a broken leg sustained in the nets, Jason Behrendorff is not allowed to
compete in the competition. Luke Wood, an England left-arm seamer, has taken
his place. Kwena Maphaka, a 17-year-old fast bowler from South Africa, was also
forced to replace Dilshan Madushanka. Although Gerald Coetzee has joined the
team, his groyne injury is still healing.
the skipper. After
replacing Rohit Sharma as captain, Hardik Pandya has returned to Mumbai. A
current India T20I captain will be playing for the first time in the IPL under
a different captain. It will be intriguing to observe how Rohit performs in the
absence of the additional responsibilities.
Coetzee, Maphaka, Wood, Nuwan Thushara, Romario Shepherd, and Mohammad Nabi are
the six new foreign players. Thushara, who bowls like Lasith Malinga, recently
amassed a five-for, including a hat-trick, against Bangladesh in a Twenty20
International. Shreyas Gopal has been added to the uncapped Indians as a backup
for Piyush Chawla.
Mumbai has a
significant Indian core once more. Mumbai can have an all-Indian top five with
Rohit, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar, Hardik, and Tilak Varma once Suryakumar
becomes available. As they shown last season, this batting group can often post
or chase down totals above 200 when Tim David bats at No. 6. Additionally,
Tilak and Kishan assist with the left-right combination.
The fact that Hardik declared himself fit to bowl during the preseason news
conference gives the team excellent balance. Mumbai have two additional
excellent all-rounders in Shepherd and Nabi, but as Mark Boucher mentioned,
they might only play three foreign players at a time.
In Jasprit Bumrah, Mumbai have a fast bowler who can bowl across phases. After
standout performances in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the recent Test series
against England, he is expected to lead the way once again.
Mumbai is hoping
Suryakumar doesn’t miss too many matches, considering Kishan hasn’t
participated in a major league match since November. Behrendorff’s absence is a
major setback because he was supposed to be the powerplay specialist. Their
lack of flexibility is further exacerbated by Coetzee’s early absence.
Mumbai also lacks sufficient resources for spin. Although Chawla was a key
player for them the previous season, his performance in the most recent Syed
Mushtaq Ali Trophy was not as impressive, with four wickets at an economy of
8.40 from seven games. Can he spearhead Mumbai’s spin attack at 35?
Despite having age and form on his side, Kumar Kartikeya hasn’t performed well
in the IPL. Over the past three IPL seasons, Shreyas has only participated in
four games.
In the schedule
released so far (March 22-April 7), Mumbai are to play four games. The first
two away, against Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad, and the next two at
home, against Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals. After the third match, they
have a break of five days.
