Assume the role of
Sunrisers Hyderabad. In the fourteenth over, you have the Kolkata Knight Riders
six down for not too many. Having just struck out the lone hitter in the top
five to reach double digits, you are in a great mood. At number eight, you then
witness Andre Russell leaving.
Assume the role of Sunrisers Hyderabad. In a 200+ chase, you have raced to 67
in seven overs. Russell then enters the field to dismiss your opener, who is
hitting at a pace approaching 170, with the second ball of his stint.
Russell emerged
victorious on a night when one team scored 208, the other 204, and witnessed a
match between two of the best cricket ball hitters. not by much, though.
Heinrich Klaasen nearly pulled off the unbelievable, reducing the score down to
7 off 5, but he was unable to seal the victory for SRH with 60 needed off the
next three overs. To the pleasure of a raucous Eden Gardens crowd, KKR also
managed to sneak home in a last-ball drama.
KKR reached 208 for
7 from the depths of 119 for 6, thanks to Russell’s unbeaten 25-ball 64. That
it came right at the start of the season would have thrilled him to no end.
Rumoured to be past
his prime, Russell didn’t have a fantastic IPL season last year, failing to
register a single fifty or more in 14 innings. However, he was in excellent
form heading into KKR’s IPL 2024 opener. This year, the Jamaican has hammered
410 runs at a strike average of 222.82 in 14 T20 innings. With his form behind
him, he exuded confidence right away.
Pat Cummins had to give Markande another go at Russell because of matchups. It
seemed sense to do so. In the IPL 2023, Russell had fallen five times at a
strike rate of 113.51 to legspinners. However, in the T20s in 2024, he had
struck out at a strike rate of 259.25, thudding legspinners only once.
Russell was not
having any of it when Markande returned in the 16th over of the innings. The
first ball he cleared with his front leg was a slog sweep, reaching 91 metres
over deep midwicket. Markande shaved off a tiny bit of length after two balls.
Russell seemed unfazed by this, as he struck the ball with a jaunty swing and
sent it screaming 102 metres over deep midwicket. The next ball had a similar
length and result, measuring 96 metres in distance.
Having found his rhythm, Russell turned his attention to Bhuvneshwar Kumar,
with whom he has enjoyed considerable success. Bhuvneshwar conceded 44 runs in
his final two overs after being dismissed for just seven in his opening two.
Russell wasn’t done
with the game after his batting masterclass. He came back to remove opener
Abhishek Sharma with a sharp bouncer before getting the better of Abdul Samad
in the 17th over to finish with 2 for 25 and cap off a special night.
KKR will be ecstatic
not only with the two points but that the win was set up by one of their most
vital cogs. An in-form Russell is critical to KKR trying to bring back the
glory days of 2012 and 2014. And if Saturday was any indication, other teams
better watch out.
