[Saba Sports News] After a thrilling performance in the series-opener against India in Hyderabad, England head coach Brendon McCullum surprised pundits with his strategic insights ahead of the Vizag test. Despite initial skepticism, England’s decision to field a lone pacer paid dividend as they clinched a 28-run victory in the first Test.
The spotlight, however, fell on England’s left-arm debutant spinner, Tom Hartley. Initially struggling in the first innings, where he conceded 131 runs and claimed only two wickets with an economy rate of 5.2, Hartley staged a remarkable comeback in the second innings. His stellar performance saw him bagging seven crucial wickets while maintaining an impressive economy rate of 2.4.
Praising Hartley’s resilience, McCullum hailed the 24-year-old spinner as a tough character and commended Ben Stokes’ leadership for backing him despite a lackluster start. Hartley’s contributions were not confined to his bowling prowess; he also made significant batting contributions with scores of 23 and 34 runs in the first and second innings respectively.
“We saw something in him that we thought will work over here. He is a tough character and the way skipper handled him was quite remarkable as well. He obviously bowled us to the Test win,” McCullum said as quoted in an interview with SENZ Radio.
“When you see guys who are good enough and the conditions will suit them it is like horses for courses. You got to back your judgement on things like that. If you like the skillsets and the character you need to be brave with the selection call as well,” McCullum added.
McCullum also shed light on off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, who missed out on the first Test due to his late arrival in India. Hinting at the possibility of an all-spin attack in Visakhapatnam, McCullum suggested that Bashir could replace Mark Wood in the playing XI.
“He, again like Tom Hartley, has little first-class experience but we thought his skill could help us in here. The guys gave him a huge cheer and he witnessed the Test win. He also come to calculation for the next Test match. We won’t be afraid to play all spinners if the wickets will turn more,” McCullum concluded.
As the anticipation builds for the second test scheduled to commence on 2nd February in Visakhapatnam, India will aim to stage a comeback and level the series.
