[Saba Sports News] In a major development, Australian cricket icon David Warner has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs), in addition to his imminent departure from Test cricket after the upcoming New Year’s Test against Pakistan in Sydney.
During a press conference at the Sydney Cricket Ground, the 37-year-old Warner, fresh from securing his second 50-over World Cup title, confirmed his decision to step away from ODIs.
He highlighted the significance of winning the World Cup in India as a major achievement.
Reflecting on his decision, Warner said, “I’m definitely retiring from one-day cricket as well. Winning [the World Cup] in India, from where we were, was absolutely amazing. It was a decision that I was very, very comfortable with.”
Despite retiring from ODIs, Warner left the door open for a potential return in the 2025 Champions Trophy, should his form and fitness permit. He expressed willingness to represent Australia again if needed in two years’ time.
By announcing his retirement, Warner concludes a remarkable ODI career as Australia’s sixth-highest run-scorer in the format, with 6932 runs from 161 matches, including 22 centuries. However, he remains active in T20 cricket and looks forward to participating in franchise leagues, with his next stint being with the Dubai Capitals in the ILT20.
As Warner prepares for his final Test in the ongoing series against Pakistan in Sydney, fans eagerly anticipate his continued contributions in T20 cricket and the possibility of his participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy, adding to his illustrious career.
