The foundation’s statement, reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, highlighted Kohl’s legacy of putting people first, evident in his dealings with employees, customers, and charitable causes.
The “Herb Kohl Way,” a street named after him near the Fiserv Forum, symbolizes his values of humility, commitment, compromise, and kindness.
Born in Milwaukee, Kohl gained prominence as a co-founder of the Kohl’s department store chain, alongside his father and brother. He also served as a Democratic senator from Wisconsin in the United States Congress for four terms from 1989 to 2013.
Kohl acquired the majority share of the Bucks in 1985 for $18 million from Jim Fitzgerald, ensuring the team’s stay in Milwaukee. Although he sold his majority stake in 2014 to Wes Edens and Marc Lasry for a record $550 million, he maintained a minority interest until his death, including during the Bucks’ 2021 NBA championship. Edens remains a co-owner of the Bucks, while Lasry has recently sold his share to a prominent NFL owner.
