[Saba Sports News] Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his resignation from the captaincy post at Melbourne Stars after his side failed the reach the playoffs in the Big Bash League (BBL) for the fourth straight season.
As reported by ESPNCricinfo, Maxwell conveyed his decision to the team after they played their last match in the BBL 2023-24 versus Hobart Hurricanes on Monday.
In the eight-team tournament, Melbourne Stars finished sixth with just four wins in 10 games and missed out on the playoff berth.
Speaking after his final game of the season, Maxwell asserted:
“We left our run in someone else’s hands which is never what you want to do in this game. We put ourselves in this position and we have to live with that now. After the first couple of years, having so much dominance and not being able to get over that final hurdle, it feels like the last four years out of finals contention is quite frustrating. We feel like we’ve had a good enough list, probably haven’t had enough luck with injuries and timing, replacements and it just all seems to compound on itself.”
Maxwell took over the charge of the side ahead of BBL 08. He led them to consecutive finals in his first two editions at the helm but failed to clinch the title.
He missed BBL 12 due to an injury. In four seasons as skipper, Maxwell led Melbourne Stars in 35 wins and 31 losses.
Marcus Stoinis is being seen as his potential successor but he is currently out of contract.
