Due to a knee injury, Tom Curran will miss the balance
of his BBL season with the Sydney Sixers and may not play for the Desert Vipers
in the ILT20.
Curran sustained the injury during the Sixers’ most
recent game against the Melbourne Stars. As the team looks to secure a
postseason berth, Curran will now miss the final two regular-season games. Due
to his obligations for the ILT20, he was not expected to be available for the
BBL finals. The Vipers’ campaign kicks off on January 21.
“The full extent of the injury is currently not
known with Curran set to return to the UK in the coming days and undergo
further assessment at home,” a Sixers statement said.
Curran’s four-match punishment for intimidating fourth
umpire Muhammad Qureshi—despite being ordered not to—during his pre-match
run-ups on the Launceston pitch has caused disruptions to the BBL championship.
The sentence was upheld notwithstanding his appeal.
“I am genuinely sorry that I chose to continue to
practice my run up in the direction of Umpire Qureshi and if he ever thought I
sought to make physical contact with him,” Curran said.
In the matchup with the Hobart Hurricanes, Curran had
his finest game of the season, going 3 for 19.
Depending on how they balance things, Hayden Kerr may
be allowed to rejoin the team in his place, even though Steven Smith will be
eligible for the Sixers on Friday when they play the Sydney Thunder. James
Vince has an ILT20 contract with the Gulf Giants, meaning he will also miss the
finals.
