[Saba Sports News] The Ranji Trophy 2023-24 witnessed a remarkable display of cricketing prowess with a staggering 701 runs being scored on Day 1 alone in the match between Hyderabad and Arunachal Pradesh at Hyderabad’s NextGen cricket ground.
The match commenced with Hyderabad opting to bowl first, a decision that proved astute as they bundled out the visiting team for just 172 runs in 39.4 overs. Arunachal Pradesh opener Techi Doria emerged as the lone standout, crafting an unbeaten 97 off 127 balls. The rest of the batting lineup faltered against Hyderabad’s pace duo of Chama V Milind and Kartikeya Kak, who claimed three wickets each.
The real spectacle unfolded as Hyderabad began their innings. Local lad and southpaw opener Tanmay Agarwal, along with Hyderabad skipper Gahlaut Rahul Singh, unleashed a relentless assault on the opposition, turning the four-day Ranji encounter into a T20 spectacle.
Tanmay’s monumental innings saw him remain unbeaten on Day 1, amassing a colossal 323 runs off just 160 balls, boasting a magnificent strike rate of 201.87. His innings comprised 33 fours and 21 sixes, making him the first player in India to achieve a 300-run feat in a single day of play. Meanwhile, Singh departed after a well-constructed 185 off 105 deliveries, striking at 176.19, inclusive of 26 fours and three sixes.
Hyderabad’s blistering batting display propelled them to a commanding total of 529 runs in just 48 overs, boasting a staggering run rate of 11.02. This imposing total granted them a substantial first-innings lead of 357 runs.
This extraordinary feat marked only the second instance in the first-class cricket history where more than 700 runs were amassed on Day 1. The previous occurrence dates back to May 15, 1948, during a match between The Australians and Essex at Southend-on-Sea.
Hyderabad’s innings showcased a blend of power hitting and strategic acceleration. They commenced steadily, taking 81 balls to reach the 100-run mark, before ramping up the tempo, requiring just 61 balls to reach 200. The momentum continued unabated, with the 300-run milestone reached in a mere 40 balls. Maintaining their relentless pace, they added another 100 runs in 41 balls to breach the 400-run mark, followed by a swift accumulation of 100 more runs in just 40 balls, culminating in a remarkable total of 500 runs.
