[Saba Sports News] Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma was seen applauding Virat Kohli for his valiant effort in the second innings of the first Test against South Africa in Centurion. Despite India’s challenging situation, Kohli’s skillful 76-run innings infused life into the team’s efforts. A circulating video highlights Sharma’s gesture of clapping and patting Kohli on the back as he returned to the pavilion.
South Africa, in their first innings, set a daunting 408 runs, led by Dean Elgar’s remarkable 185. For India, Jasprit Bumrah emerged as the lead wicket-taker, claiming four wickets. Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Prasidh Krishna, and Ravichandran Ashwin contributed as well, with Siraj taking two wickets and the others one each.
India’s second innings started poorly, with early dismissals of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma, scoring only five and zero respectively. Shubman Gill added a crucial 26 runs. However, it was Kohli’s 76 off 82 deliveries that truly steadied India’s innings. The 35-year-old’s knock raised hopes for a comeback.
Despite Kohli’s efforts, the remainder of the Indian batting lineup struggled. Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul were dismissed for six and four runs, respectively. Eventually, India was all out for 131, losing the match by an innings and 32 runs.
In South Africa’s bowling lineup, Nandre Burger led with four wickets, while Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada took three and two wickets, respectively. The match underscored Kohli’s resilience and the team’s need for collective performance to combat strong oppositions like South Africa.
