[Saba Sports News] Recently, England’s young off-spinner Shoaib Bashir made a memorable Test debut in Visakhapatnam, capturing the wicket of the acclaimed Rohit Sharma. Despite the challenges of delayed visas, Bashir arrived in India with a mix of disbelief and excitement, reflecting on the unpredictability of his journey.
“If you were to tell me that two years ago, I would laugh. It was a very special moment receiving my Test cap and for me to get Rohit Sharma as my first wicket was very, very special,” Bashir remarked, underscoring the significance of both receiving his Test cap and claiming Sharma as his first wicket, given Sharma’s expertise against spin.
During his debut, Bashir bowled 28 overs, taking two wickets for 100 runs. He expressed deep gratitude towards his family and God for their unwavering support through his fluctuating cricket career.
“I’m just so grateful to God and my family. They’ve supported me through thick and thin. I had a lot of ups and downs in my journey, so I just want to thank them as well.”
The complications surrounding his visa, which saw him arriving in India just in time for the second Test, added an unforgettable element to his debut experience. Bashir remained optimistic throughout the visa issues, confident in his eventual participation.
“I always knew I’d get the visa. I did have a few troubles with it, but look, we’re here now and I got to make my debut and it’s such a special day. It makes it more memorable, yeah. I had a bit of trouble, bit of hassle with it but to come out to India now and make my Test debut is unbelievable,” he added.
Reflecting on his debut day’s play, Bashir acknowledged the toughness of the pitch, which offered little assistance, but praised his team’s effort for securing six wickets. With hopes high for the next day, Bashir looked forward to England making further inroads.
A poignant moment for Bashir was receiving his Test cap from Jack Leach, a close teammate from Somerset. Leach’s encouragement and acknowledgment of Bashir’s potential and hard work made the occasion deeply meaningful. Bashir highlighted the special bond they share, with Leach having been an early supporter of his talents. This support, combined with his remarkable debut performance, marks the beginning of what promises to be an exciting career for Shoaib Bashir.
