[Saba Sports News] David Teeger, initially the captain of South Africa’s under-19 cricket team, has been removed from his leadership role due to safety concerns following his pro-Israel comments amidst the Israel-Palestine conflict. This decision comes just before the U19 World Cup, potentially impacting the team’s preparations.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) anticipates protests during the World Cup in response to Teeger’s remarks. In a statement, CSA explained that the decision to remove Teeger as captain was made in the team’s and the board’s best interest. South Africa is set to begin their World Cup journey on January 19 against the West Indies, followed by matches against England and Scotland.
CSA has been monitoring security risks surrounding the World Cup and has been warned about potential protests, particularly targeting Teeger’s role as captain. These protests could escalate to conflicts or even violence, including clashes between different protest groups.
Teeger’s inclusion in the team had already sparked controversy in South Africa. Pro-Palestinian supporters demonstrated outside Newlands during the recent New Year’s Test between India and South Africa.
CSA emphasized its responsibility to ensure the safety of all World Cup participants and spectators. Respecting the advice of security experts, CSA concluded that relieving Teeger of his captaincy was a necessary measure under these circumstances.
