KKR finished ninth
last season with six wins and eight losses. They were just four points out of
contention for the postseason.
Both Gus Atkinson (workload management) and Jason Roy (personal reasons) have
withdrawn. Phil Salt, the No. 2 T20I batter in the world right now, and
Dushmantha Chameera have taken their places. But Chameera is rushing to recover
after suffering a quadriceps ailment recently.
Concerns have also been raised over Shreyas Iyer’s health. Due to back spasms,
he missed the final two days of the Ranji Trophy match.
In between seasons,
KKR declared that Gautam Gambhir would rejoin the squad as a team mentor. His
leadership led KKR to their sole IPL championships in 2012 and 2014. He will
collaborate closely with Chandrakant Pandit, the head coach.
Another reunion took place at the auction table when Manish Pandey, a previous
batter for the Kolkata Knight Riders, rejoined the team for INR 50 lakh.
Sherfane Rutherford, Ramandeep Singh, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Chetan Sakariya
were among the other noteworthy arrivals. The most intriguing selection,
though, was Mitchell Starc, who went for an all-time high of INR 24.75 crore at
the auction and will greatly improve a fast-bowling team that is still
relatively young.
Even though they
don’t have as much combined experience as some other teams, Shreyas Iyer,
Venkatesh Iyer, Nitish Rana, and Rinku Singh form a solid Indian hitting core.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Salt, two hard-hitting wicketkeeper-batters, combined at
the top are a dynamic combination, and they are both playing quite well.
In the final overs, bowlers face a daunting task from Rinku and Andre Russell.
Rinku, who debuted in the IPL 2022 and 2023 with respective scores of 148.71
and 149.52, comes into this season having received his first cap as an Indian
player.
With the arrival of
Mujeeb, the spin trio of Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy, and Suyash Sharma
becomes even more formidable as they look to build on their successful 2023
collectively. The pitches may turn more than normal because to Gambhir’s
fondness for spin at home, which is advantageous for their Indian hitters,
particularly Shreyas and Nitish.
Though they are
inexperienced in comparison to other teams, KKR’s Indian fast-bowling trio of
Vaibhav Arora, Harshit Rana, and Sakariya is exciting. That might have been a
significant factor in KKR’s heavy investment in Starc.
Since the team lacks a comparable substitute for Russell and Starc, they will
also need to carefully manage their workloads. In terms of injuries, both
matchwinners have proved quite flimsy over the years.
In the first half of the season, they only play three games with lengthy intervals
in between. They begin play on March 23 at home against Sunrisers Hyderabad. On
March 29 they travel to Bengaluru to play Royal Challengers Bangalore. On April
3, they head to Visakhapatnam to play Delhi Capitals.
