[Saba Sports News] Deandre Ayton seems to be borrowing a page from Ben Simmons’ playbook of explanations. In a recent interview with The Oregonian, the Portland Trail Blazers’ big man discussed his early-season struggles, attributing them, in part, to [checks notes] sleeping on an air mattress.
Ayton stated, “My body wasn’t just my body. People forget the humane difference of me adjusting to everything. Just being comfortable in waking up. I didn’t have a bed for quite some time. I was on an air mattress. Just trying to figure this out.”
The former No. 1 overall pick, now in his first season with the Blazers, also mentioned family visits and settling his son, Deandre Ayton Jr., as factors affecting his performance.
While it’s understandable that an air mattress might not provide the best rest for a seven-footer like Ayton, some might question why he couldn’t arrange more suitable sleeping accommodations, especially given his $133 million contract. Ayton’s track record regarding work ethic has also drawn scrutiny, with reports of tardiness and tantrums during his time in Portland adding to the skepticism.
Despite his early-season struggles, Ayton has shown improvement, posting a 25-14 line since the All-Star break.
