(sabasports report) France got off to a good start at Euro 2024 with a 1-0 win over Austria in the first round of Group D. In the first half, Kylian Mbappe’s cross set up Max Wober’s own goal. In the second half, Mbappe missed a solo chance and was substituted at the end of the game with a bloody nose.
It was the 25th meeting between France and Austria, with France winning 13 games, drawing three games and losing nine. The teams last met in the Nations League group stage in September 2022, with France winning 2-0.
Nine minutes into the first half, Antoine Griezmann split the ball before falling to the ground, Adrien Rabiot drove straight in, and Mbappe raced to the left side of the box with a low shot that Daniel Bachmann cleared off the line. In the 16th minute Ousmane Dembele cut inside the right and was tackled by Warbell, who was booked. Griezmann then directed a free kick straight to the goal by Penz.
In the 66th minute, Dembele triangulated and Jules Kounde’s low shot was blocked by defenders. In the 67th minute, N’Golo Kante drove straight down the right side of the box and Marcus Thuram’s angled volley was blocked.
