[Saba Sports News] The relationship between Klay Thompson and the Golden State Warriors deteriorated before they parted ways this week. The veteran sharpshooter reportedly did not want Stephen Curry to intervene to salvage the situation.
Anthony Slater of The Athletic published a story on Tuesday detailing the events leading to Thompson’s split from the Warriors. During extension negotiations last year, Thompson asked Curry not to use his significant influence to persuade team executives to make a stronger effort to retain him.
Thompson wanted Warriors owner Joe Lacob and the front office to genuinely desire his return, rather than making an offer swayed by Curry. Slater also noted minimal communication between Thompson and the Warriors in recent weeks. While the team planned to make a competitive offer once the market was established, they never had the chance.
Thompson signed a three-year, $50 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks on Monday as part of a sign-and-trade. The Warriors had previously offered Thompson a two-year, $48 million extension before last season, so his new deal with Dallas averages less annually.
Thompson appeared to want compensation for his role in winning four NBA titles, in addition to his current worth. Golden State preferred to let the market dictate his value, which offended the 34-year-old.
Eventually, tensions may ease between Thompson and the team where he spent the first 13 years of his career. The Warriors have already made a classy gesture following his departure.
