[Saba Sports News] A relatively minor move by the San Antonio Spurs over the weekend generated some buzz among fans.
On Saturday, the Spurs traded combo guard Devonte’ Graham and a second-round pick to the Charlotte Hornets. Charlotte plans to waive Graham once the trade is finalized, making the 29-year-old a free agent.
Fans speculated that the Spurs were preparing for a bigger move, as the trade cleared $12.7 million in cap space. The Spurs had been mentioned as a potential third team in a DeMar DeRozan sign-and-trade between the Chicago Bulls and Sacramento Kings.
Indeed, news of DeRozan joining the Kings broke just hours after the Graham deal. As part of the transaction, the Spurs received Kings forward Harrison Barnes and his $18 million salary for next season.
DeRozan, who played for the Spurs from 2018 to 2021, may have benefited from San Antonio’s front office facilitating his move to Sacramento. The Kings needed the Spurs’ help to create the necessary cap space to acquire DeRozan.
