[Saba Sports News] Will longtime Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob sell his stake in the team for a homecoming to the East Coast? According to Lacob, it’s highly unlikely.
Lacob appeared on “The Athletic NBA Show” with David Aldridge and Marcus Thompson, where he was asked about potentially bidding for the Boston Celtics, recently put up for sale by owner Wyc Grousbeck. Lacob dismissed the idea emphatically.
“No chance,” Lacob said, per NESN. “That ship sailed a long time ago. I’m a Warrior, this is my identity, it’s our identity. I love what we’ve done, our fans, our arena, and the last decade. I want to create an even longer and greater legacy for this organization.”
Lacob, 68, hails from Bedford, Mass., and was a part-owner of the Celtics from 2006-10, including during their 2008 NBA title win. He sold his stake in the Celtics when he purchased the Warriors in 2010.
Returning to Boston’s ownership group would require Lacob to sell his stake in the Warriors, a team he led to four NBA championships in the last decade. Lacob has no interest in doing that, though he may still pursue his longstanding interest in buying an MLB team.
Meanwhile, a new majority owner for the Celtics is already emerging, and it may be a very familiar figure.
