[Saba Sports News] Bronny James concluded his 2024 Summer League run with averages of 8.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.5 assists, showing visible improvement over the summer. Lakers Summer League coach Dane Johnson shared his observations on Bronny and his potential future.
“He had two pretty good games at the end. This will help him going into the summer so we can work on different things with him, building his confidence and proving he can play at this level. It will take time and lots of reps. He doesn’t let distractions affect him; he just wants to play and be part of the team. He’s a good kid, listens well, and is eager to learn.”
Johnson noted that Bronny’s position is still undefined as he is a solid combo guard. While undersized for a shooting guard, he is not yet a strong enough playmaker for a point guard.
“Right now, he’s more of a shooting guard, but he could become a combo guard. He picks up things quickly, whether it’s plays or defensive coverages. We might work on his point guard skills over the summer, but for now, he’s more of a secondary playmaker.”
Bronny’s Summer League performance sparked mixed opinions. He started slowly, missing shots and having minimal impact, but his last two games showed potential as a two-way 3-and-D player, with effective shooting and strong on-ball defense.
Despite shooting 35.0% from the field and 15.8% from three, he demonstrated his potential as an intense and active defender.
