[Saba Sports News] One Golden State Warriors player is reportedly keeping the Utah Jazz interested in a potential Lauri Markkanen trade.
The Warriors have been linked to the Jazz All-Star for weeks, especially after Klay Thompson’s departure, creating a need for a secondary scorer alongside Steph Curry.
Warriors sophomore Brandin Podziemski is the Jazz’s primary target in any trade package for Markkanen.
According to NBA reporter Marc Stein, Utah’s interest in Podziemski is “serious enough” to keep the prospect of a Markkanen-to-Warriors deal alive.
Stein also reported that the Warriors “would be more willing” to part with forward Jonathan Kuminga. However, Kuminga is entering the final year of his rookie contract, while Podziemski is in the second year of his four-year rookie deal. The Jazz would likely need to negotiate an extension with Kuminga to keep him long-term, while Podziemski aligns better with their timeline.
Kuminga had a breakout third season with the Warriors, averaging 16.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game on nearly 53% shooting. Despite this, rumors of a rift with head coach Steve Kerr circulated during the season.
Podziemski averaged 9.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in his rookie year. With Thompson’s starting guard spot now vacant, the Santa Clara product could be poised for a significant role next season.
