[Saba Sports News] The Golden State Warriors might not be the powerhouse they once were, but they’re not ready to throw in the towel. According to NBA insider Brett Siegel, the Warriors remain focused on building a championship team around their franchise superstar, Stephen Curry.
“The organization is committed to staying competitive as Curry’s legendary career nears its end, while also keeping an eye on their long-term future.”
Drafted 7th overall in 2009, Curry’s exceptional ball-handling and shooting skills led to a breakout season with the Warriors. Over the past 15 years, he’s established himself as an all-time great, with career averages of 24.8 points, 6.4 assists, and 4.7 rebounds per game on 47.3% shooting. Widely regarded as the greatest shooter in basketball history, Curry is a 4x champion, 10x All-Star, and 2x scoring leader. This summer, he added an Olympic gold medal to his accolades, averaging 12.4 points and 2.4 rebounds per game.
Curry, who has spent his entire career with the Warriors, has become the face of the franchise, leading them to a dynasty from 2015 to 2019. After a strong 2023-24 campaign, there’s optimism he can maintain this level of play for years to come. However, following a 10th-place finish in the West last season, the Warriors face significant pressure to stay competitive and make moves to improve the team.
Despite his loyalty, Curry has been clear about his desire to continue winning. With two years and $114 million left on his contract, he remains focused on adding more championships to his already impressive resume.
The biggest challenge for the Warriors is how to regain their competitive edge after losing key players. Klay Thompson’s departure last month dealt a blow to their championship core, and his replacement, Buddy Hield, is still unproven. To stay competitive, the Warriors will need strong performances from Andrew Wiggins, Draymond Green, and Jonathan Kuminga. In a tough Western Conference, with teams like the Nuggets, Timberwolves, and Mavericks, the margin for error is slim.
While the road back to the top of the West may be challenging, the Warriors owe it to Curry to do everything they can to get there. With the time he has left, the Warriors still have a chance to win more titles and solidify their legacy as one of the most successful franchises in modern sports history.
