[Saba Sports News] Darius Garland is preparing to return to the court after being sidelined for several weeks due to a jaw injury, marking a challenging recovery journey for the Cleveland Cavaliers standout. The Athletic’s Shams Charania reports that Garland had to endure having his mouth wired shut for a month to allow his fractured jaw to mend. During this period, the eminent point guard subsisted on a liquid diet and worked on regaining the weight he lost. His anticipated comeback is set for Wednesday night’s game against the Detroit Pistons.
The circumstances leading to Garland’s injury were quite extraordinary. The incident occurred as he was making a play to the basket, guarded by Kristaps Porzingis, in a match against the Boston Celtics on December 14. A collision with Porzingis’ midsection led to Garland’s jaw fracture. Footage of the incident has been circulated online.
In a video shared by the Cavs from their recent Paris trip, Garland is seen speaking through clenched teeth, unable to open his mouth fully.
So far this season, Garland has posted impressive averages of 20.7 points and 5.9 assists over 20 games. In his absence, the Cavaliers, who reached the playoffs last season, have maintained a strong record of 28-16. With Garland’s return, the team is poised to enhance its performance, benefiting from the skills of one of its leading players.
