[Saba Sports News] In a surprising turn of events, England defeated India by 28 runs in the first Test of their five-match series at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Despite trailing by 190 runs in the first innings, England mounted a remarkable comeback, led by Ollie Pope’s impressive 196 off 278 balls. India’s second innings collapse to 202 runs, chasing a target of 230, was largely due to debutant Tom Hartley’s exceptional bowling, taking 7/62.
India’s struggle began in the third session of Day 3, as Pope and Ben Foakes built a 112-run partnership, pushing England’s lead to 85. India’s defensive field settings under captain Rohit Sharma allowed easy strike rotation for the English batsmen.
Cricketer-turned-commentator Dinesh Karthik criticized India’s approach, emphasizing the need for Rohit Sharma to adopt a more proactive and aggressive strategy, especially against new batsmen and tailenders. Karthik urged Sharma to avoid defaulting to the bowlers’ preferred field settings, pushing for more attacking positions to challenge England’s lower-order batsmen, who were comfortably rotating strike on the turning pitch.
Looking ahead to the second Test in Visakhapatnam starting on February 02, India faces challenges with Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul ruled out due to injuries. Sarfaraz Khan, Washington Sundar, and Saurabh Kumar have been named as replacements.
