[Saba Sports News] Dwight Howard recently shared a story of betrayal that cost him $7 million and shattered his dream of owning a WNBA team. On his show, Above the Rim With DH12, the former NBA star revealed that his former agent stole millions, derailing his plan to purchase the Atlanta Dream.
Howard explained how he was working with a group of investors to buy the team, hoping one day his two daughters could play for the Dream.
Though the NBA rules prevented him from outright ownership while still playing, he planned to take a behind-the-scenes role. After giving the group the money, Howard expected everything to move forward.
However, he soon discovered his agent and others involved had disappeared, and the team had been sold to someone else.
He described the betrayal, saying, “I trusted this agent… but these agents, lawyers—they be scheming, they be lying, and they all have the same motive: to take from you.” In March 2023, Howard’s former agent, Charles Briscoe, was arrested on charges including wire fraud and identity theft, allegedly using the $7 million for personal purchases. Briscoe now faces up to 40 years in prison.
Despite the setback, Howard, whose net worth is around $140 million in 2024, hasn’t given up on his entrepreneurial dreams. He became a part-owner of a Taiwanese basketball league and the Taiwan Mustangs, marking a new chapter in his ownership journey.
