[Saba Sports News] ormer ACC standout John Henson has decided to trade the basketball court for the golf course. In an interview with RG.org, the former NBA big man officially announced his retirement from playing and expressed his excitement about transitioning into sports media.
“I was blessed to play this long,” said Henson. “Now, I’m exploring what’s next at 33. I have time to figure things out, and this is just the next phase.”
Henson, a 6’10” shot-blocker who played three seasons at UNC, earned two ACC Defensive Player of the Year awards and was a first-round pick by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2012. After helping Giannis Antetokounmpo’s early playoff runs and stints with the Cavs and Pistons, Henson’s playing career ended in 2020.
Now, Henson is thriving in sports media, landing roles with Raycom to provide color commentary for ACC games and working with SiriusXM’s “ACC Today” in addition to YouTube and podcast ventures. Despite leaving the court, Henson is still making his mark in basketball.
