[Saba Sports News] AJ Griffin is stepping away from the NBA to pursue a higher calling. In a video on his YouTube channel, the former Atlanta Hawks forward explained his decision to retire at just 21.
Griffin said he is dedicating his life to Christ and plans to become a full-time minister.
“I gave up basketball to follow Jesus,” Griffin shared. “To many, it may seem like a loss, but I’m excited to fully serve God with all my heart and time.”
Griffin, a former five-star recruit and the 16th overall pick by the Hawks in 2022, played two seasons in Atlanta, averaging 7.5 points and 1.9 rebounds.
After earning $7.5 million but leaving $9.6 million on the table, Griffin, the son of former Bucks head coach Adrian Griffin, is now embarking on a new life journey, similar to other ex-NBA players who left the sport for faith-based reasons.
