[Saba Sports News] The San Antonio Spurs may not be a top team just yet, but with generational talent Victor Wembanyama, their rise could come soon.
In his rookie season, Wembanyama displayed two-way skills that make him a nightmare for opponents, and he’s already expanding his game.
During Wednesday’s preseason game against the Orlando Magic, Wembanyama channeled his inner Chris Paul, pulling off an impressive no-look pass to Malaki Branham under the basket.
At 7’4″, his vision creates an unfair advantage, and as he hones his playmaking, he could become even more unstoppable. Although he struggled with turnovers last season, averaging 3.7 compared to 3.9 assists, he now has Paul to learn from as a mentor.
Wembanyama put up 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.6 blocks per game in his rookie season, a testament to his rapid growth. The Spurs have taken a measured approach to building around him, adding veteran Chris Paul to steady the lineup and Harrison Barnes as a solid 3-and-D presence.
Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan also complement Wembanyama, with Vassell moving into an off-ball role and Sochan developing as a versatile contributor.
While the long-term core is still forming—with young players like Stephon Castle, Malaki Branham, and Blake Wesley vying for roles—the Spurs are well-positioned to make a leap. The league should be on notice: these young Spurs are poised to shake things up.
