In their 2022 financial report, Barcelona incorrectly classified 25% of the revenue from the sale of La Liga broadcasting rights (2.67 million euros) as operating income instead of non-recurring income, thereby exaggerating the club’s operational performance. However, this action violated UEFA’s regulations, leading to a fine of 500,000 euros imposed by UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body (CFCB). Barcelona contested UEFA’s punishment and subsequently appealed to CAS, which has now dismissed Barcelona’s appeal. CAS determined that the uniqueness of Barcelona’s legal and asset structure does not constitute a reason to affect the regulatory framework, thus rejecting their appeal. Additionally, the arbitration panel noted that while Barcelona’s violations could warrant a heavier penalty, UEFA’s decision to impose only a 500,000 euro fine for a first offense was somewhat lenient.
