The 2024 China Badminton Masters (Super 750) will be held from November 12 to 17 in Shenzhen, China, with a total prize pool of up to 1.15 million US dollars. The high prize money and prestigious level of the tournament have naturally attracted many top players, including world-ranking stars such as Shi Yuqi, Viktor Axelsen, Anders Antonsen, Kodai Naraoka, and Lee Zii Jia.
Looking at the men’s singles draw, the top seed Shi Yuqi, competing on home soil, will be in the upper half. In the first round, Shi Yuqi will face Lee Chia Hao from Chinese Taipei, while his compatriot Li Shifeng will take on Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo from Indonesia. If both Shi Yuqi and Li Shifeng win their matches, they will face each other in the second round. Recently, Shi Yuqi’s competitive form has fluctuated, but with his extensive experience in major tournaments and tenacious fighting spirit, this competition may be a key battle for his return to the top. Among all the players in the upper half, Shi Yuqi stands out as a unique contender, and his biggest rival in this half should be Japan’s top player Kodai Naraoka. However, if the two do meet in the upper half final, Shi Yuqi has a clear historical advantage in their previous encounters.
In the bottom half, the second seed Viktor Axelsen, third seed Anders Antonsen, seventh seed Lee Zii Jia, and eighth seed Chou Tien Chen will compete fiercely. Based on the overall strength of the players in this half, Axelsen is expected to secure a spot in the semifinals, and he is the most likely to reach the finals. Although the defending Olympic champion Axelsen has entered his thirties, judging by his dominant performance in the Hong Kong Badminton Open where he didn’t drop a single game to claim the title, he seems unwilling to slow down. Furthermore, in the recently concluded Japan Badminton Masters, Axelsen also reached the semifinals, maintaining a good competitive form. He has stated that he hasn’t trained much since the Paris Olympics, but he is satisfied with the way he returned. Achieving this after the Olympics is not easy, and even Axelsen himself is somewhat surprised.
This China Badminton Masters truly gathers many top players, and numerous strong matches are highly anticipated, making the lineup comparable to that of a “World Championship.” Will it be Shi Yuqi making a strong comeback, or will Axelsen continue to showcase his kingly prowess? Let’s see what these shining players will bring to us fans in terms of exciting performances.
