[Saba Sports News] During Monday’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers, the Charlotte Hornets found themselves at the center of controversy after an in-game skit went awry.
Typically, in-arena entertainment is designed to be lighthearted and easily forgotten, but this moment left a lasting impression for all the wrong reasons.
In the second quarter, a young fan was brought onto the court with Hugo, the team’s mascot dressed as Santa Claus. After a letter to Santa asking for a PS5 was read aloud, a cheerleader handed the excited child a bag containing the coveted console.
Cameras captured his joy, but once they stopped rolling, staff reportedly took the PS5 back and replaced it with a jersey, leaving the child confused and, reportedly, in tears.
The Hornets issued a statement apologizing for the skit, calling it a “bad decision” and acknowledging poor communication.
“Simply put, we turned the ball over, and we apologize. We have reached out to the family and are committed to not only making it right but to exceeding expectations,” the organization said. They pledged to give the child the PS5 and provide a VIP experience at a future game.
Social media backlash was swift, with fans questioning why a franchise valued at $3 billion couldn’t follow through on the $500 gift.
While the situation could have been handled better, the team’s apology and effort to make amends suggest they are trying to turn an awkward moment into a positive one. At the very least, the child will now take home both a PS5 and a memorable VIP experience.
