[Saba Sports News] A notable rookie will get a chance to follow in Kobe Bryant’s footsteps by winning the Dunk Contest as a first-year player.
Shams Charania of ESPN reported Monday that San Antonio Spurs rookie guard Stephon Castle has committed to compete in this year’s Slam Dunk Contest at NBA All-Star Weekend in San Francisco, set for Feb. 15. Castle, 20, is the first confirmed participant in the 2025 contest.
The 6-foot-6 Castle, a former national champion at UConn and the No. 4 overall pick in the 2024 draft, is averaging 11.6 points and 3.6 assists this season.
He’s also the frontrunner for Rookie of the Year in a weaker class, especially after an injury sidelined the previous favorite. Known for his explosive athleticism, Castle’s highlight-worthy dunks have already drawn attention online, suggesting he’s well-equipped to shine in the event.
While Castle might not be the biggest name fans would expect to headline a Dunk Contest, his inclusion reflects the league’s ongoing challenge in attracting A-list stars to the competition. Still, Castle’s participation promises a chance for some high-flying excitement.
