[Saba Sports News] The Washington Wizards are pulling out all the stops to promote Alex Sarr’s Rookie of the Year campaign—even turning to ice cream.
NBA reporter Marc Stein shared a photo of a unique gift he received from the Wizards: custom ice cream created in partnership with local shop Ice Cream Jubilee. The campaign, dubbed “Scoop the Future,” features personalized flavors for Sarr and fellow rookies Bub Carrington and Kyshawn George. A letter included with the gift urged voters to support Sarr for Rookie of the Year and to consider all three for the NBA’s All-Rookie Team.
Stein noted he had never seen a campaign quite like this one.
While it’s not unusual for teams to promote their players during awards season, the Wizards definitely went the extra mile with this one. The only problem? Ice cream might not be enough to tip the scales.
Sarr, the No. 2 overall pick, has put together a solid rookie campaign—averaging 13 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Still, he’s facing tough competition. Stephon Castle of the San Antonio Spurs is emerging as a frontrunner with 14.3 points per game, while top overall pick Zaccharie Risacher just dropped 36 points in a standout performance for the Hawks.
Then again, after a rough season, it’s hard to blame the Wizards for trying to spin a little good news—and maybe scoop up a win for their future star.
