[Saba Sports News] Giannis Antetokounmpo had a very on-brand reaction to the news that his head coach, Doc Rivers, had to leave Thursday night’s game early due to a stomach issue.
Rivers exited the Milwaukee Bucks’ matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers mid-game, leaving assistant coach Darvin Ham to take over. The Bucks went on to win 126-113, led by a monster performance from Antetokounmpo, who tallied a ridiculous 35 points, 17 rebounds, and 20 assists.
After the game, reporters asked Giannis about Rivers’ sudden departure, and the two-time MVP didn’t miss the chance to crack a joke.
“Didn’t they say Coach Doc had to use the restroom like Paul Pierce?” Giannis quipped, while holding his nose for dramatic (and comedic) effect. He did add, sincerely, that he hoped Rivers was feeling better.
The comment was a clear reference to the infamous moment during the 2008 NBA Finals when Paul Pierce was wheeled off the court—only to later admit it was because he needed a bathroom break. Ironically, Rivers was Pierce’s coach back then in Boston and is now leading Giannis in Milwaukee during his second season with the Bucks.
For those familiar with Giannis, the toilet humor isn’t surprising. He’s known for his playful personality and has gone viral more than once for postgame jokes—often leaning into dad jokes or even some NSFW territory.
Thursday night might have been a rough one for Rivers, but Giannis made sure everyone got at least one good laugh out of it.
