[Saba Sports News] Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban believes the team’s past concerns about Luka Doncic were based on a cultural misunderstanding—not a lack of commitment or effort.
Appearing on The Stephen A. Smith Show on Sunday, Cuban addressed reports that the Mavericks had long been worried about Doncic’s conditioning and overall approach to the game. Cuban argued those concerns stemmed from not fully understanding Doncic’s Balkan background.
“Everybody saw him. It wasn’t like he was ripped and had a six-pack,” Cuban said candidly. “The biggest mistake in trying to understand Luka is forgetting he’s from the Balkans. He’s Slovenian. You look at Jokic, who’s Serbian, and Serbian players in general—it’s a different mindset. They view the game, and life, through a different lens. That’s something we didn’t consider as much as we should have.”
Cuban emphasized that Doncic plays with high intensity and passion, even if his demeanor off the court doesn’t always reflect that.
“On the court, he’s intense. You see it in how he reacts to refs and competitors,” Cuban said. “Jokic might not wear it on his sleeve, but he’s intense too. Then they go home, and they live. Luka’s into harness racing. It’s just a different lifestyle—and that has to be accepted.”
Previous reports had indicated that Dallas worried Doncic’s injury history and off-court habits could eventually lead to long-term problems. Some inside the organization allegedly saw his laid-back attitude as a red flag. But Cuban disagrees, pointing to Nikola Jokic as proof that success can come even with a relaxed approach to life outside the gym.
Doncic, for his part, appears to hold himself to high standards. Cuban’s comments suggest a disconnect between perception and reality—one rooted more in cultural assumptions than actual lack of dedication.
Time will ultimately tell which side read the situation correctly.
