[Saba Sports News] Following the swift conclusion of the second and final Test between India and South Africa at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town, the venue has come under scrutiny. The match, which ended in just 642 balls (107 overs), marked the shortest contest in history and saw India’s first victory at this ground. Reports from Cricbuzz suggest potential sanctions and demerit points from the International Cricket Council (ICC) against the Newlands pitch.
The ICC is expected to assign demerit points to the ground, although Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s critical comments on the surface and the match referee post-game have not led to speculation about penalties against him. The match, concluding on Day 2’s second session, drew criticism, particularly towards match referee Chris Broad’s evaluation of the pitch. Broad, a former England batter, may rate the pitch as either ‘poor’ or ‘unfit’.
Pitch ratings range from ‘very good’ to ‘unfit’, with the last two categories potentially leading to demerit points, ranging from one to five, and even suspension. While ‘very good’, ‘good’, and ‘average’ ratings do not invite scrutiny, a ‘below average’ rating might incur a milder penalty. The Newlands surface is likely to receive a ‘poor’ or ‘unfit’ rating.
The ICC’s decision, made after its Dubai operations team reviews the match referee’s rating, is expected to be announced on Monday, January 8. The first Test’s surface at SuperSport Park Cricket Stadium in Centurion, which ended in three days with South Africa winning by an innings and 32 runs, also faced scrutiny but has been overshadowed by the Newlands controversy.
