After the game, Manchester City defender Ruben Dias said that the pitch at Southampton’s home ground was too dry. Southampton’s groundsman also responded on social media. Ruben Dias said after the match: “We need to do better, be more energetic, and play at a faster pace. But it’s hard to quicken the tempo because the pitch has been dried out by the sun. It’s unfortunate that Southampton is wasting time. They just want the game to stop, the slower the better, so the pitch gets even drier. But we must also perform better.” In response, Steve New, Southampton’s groundsman, posted photos showing the pitch in perfect condition on social media and wrote: “Ruben Dias, look at these ‘sand patches.’ The field was watered early in the morning, before warm-ups, before the game, and even during halftime. I admire your football abilities, but you don’t understand how to manage a pitch at all.”
