[Saba Sports News] Cricket South Africa (CSA) has faced significant criticism for selecting a second-string squad for their upcoming Test tour of New Zealand. The squad for the two-match Test series in February includes seven uncapped players, with Neil Brand, a left-handed opening batter yet to make his international debut, named as the captain.
Out of the 14 players selected, only three – David Bedingham, Keegan Petersen, and Zubayr Hamza (in the second Test) – were part of South Africa’s squad in the recent home Test series against India.
The scheduling of the two Tests in New Zealand coincides with the second edition of SA20, South Africa’s premier domestic T20 competition. The regular South African players will participate in the lucrative league, which CSA prioritizes for its potential to provide financial stability.
Proteas head coach Shukri Conrad defended CSA’s decision to field a new-look team, emphasizing the importance of SA20 in the development of South African cricket. He noted that the SA20 is crucial for the sustainability of test cricket in the country.
Conrad addressed criticism from outside the country, stating, “Our hand has been forced, everyone understands the SA20 has to happen, it is the lifeblood of local cricket. If it doesn’t happen, we won’t have test cricket anyway.”
CSA attempted to reschedule the New Zealand series to avoid the SA20 clash but was unsuccessful.
Despite the squad’s composition, Conrad expressed the team’s commitment to representing South Africa and achieving positive results in New Zealand. He acknowledged India’s recent victory in Cape Town but also commented on the challenging conditions faced by batsmen on an unpredictable pitch.
“It is a sad state of affairs when you need more luck than skill to survive in a test match,” Conrad said, emphasizing the difficulty of batting in the Cape Town Test, which India won.
