KAPAL API Indonesia Open 2025 will take place from June 3 to 8 at the Senayan Memorial Stadium in Jakarta. The Indonesia Open is one of only four Super 1000 level events on the Badminton World Tour, with a total prize fund of $1.45 million, which has attracted top players from around the world.
In the men’s singles event, Shi Yuqi, the top seed and defending champion of the tournament, will be stationed in the upper half of the draw. In his first round, he will face India’s Lakshya Sen. Based on their respective strengths, Shi Yuqi should advance smoothly. In the second round, he is likely to face either Angus Ng Ka Long of Hong Kong or Yushi Tanaka of Japan. Apart from Shi Yuqi, there are three other seeded players in the upper half: Kodai Naraoka from Japan, Anders Antonsen from Denmark, and Jonatan Christie from Indonesia. Among these, Antonsen poses the greatest threat to Shi Yuqi. The two have faced each other 10 times previously, with Shi Yuqi holding a 7-3 advantage. Their most recent encounter was in the final of the Malaysia Open in January, where Shi Yuqi defeated Antonsen 2-0 to claim the title.
On the bottom half of the draw, second seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn will face Wang Tzu Wei of Chinese Taipei in the first round. If he advances, Vitidsarn is expected to meet China’s Lu Guangzu in the second round, as they just played against each other in the final of the Singapore Open. If he makes it to the quarterfinals, Vitidsarn’s potential opponents include eighth seed Alex Lanier, Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew, or China’s Weng Hongyang. Furthermore, fourth seed Li Shifeng, who recently won the Malaysia Masters, and sixth seed Chou Tien-Chen are also in this half. Clearly, Vitidsarn’s path to the final is far from easy, surrounded by strong competitors.
In last year’s Indonesia Open final, Shi Yuqi defeated Antonsson 2-1 to win the championship. Now, Shi Yuqi faces a host of top-tier opponents, making it no small feat to retain his title. Shi Yuqi must bring his full strength and tactical abilities to have a chance at defending his crown. Meanwhile, Kunlavut Vitidsarn has been in excellent form lately and could very well wrestle the title away from Shi Yuqi. Let us wait and see who comes out on top in these thrilling matches!
