[Saba Sports News] The WNBA has issued disciplinary measures following the heated showdown between the Indiana Fever and Connecticut Sun on Tuesday night.
According to ESPN’s Alexa Philippou, Sun guard Marina Mabrey’s technical foul from the game has been upgraded to a flagrant 2 foul. Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who committed a flagrant 2 foul on Connecticut’s Jacy Sheldon late in the game, has also been fined, though the exact amount has not been disclosed.
Per Front Office Sports, WNBA players are fined $200 for technical fouls, $200 for flagrant 1s, and $400 for flagrant 2s.
That means Mabrey’s fine has increased to at least $400, while Cunningham’s fine is expected to exceed that amount due to the severity and separate nature of her infraction.
Despite the multiple altercations, no players will be suspended.
The game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis featured several tense moments. Caitlin Clark pushed Sheldon in the first half after the two got into each other’s faces. In the third quarter, Sheldon hit Clark in the face, prompting a retaliatory shove from Clark. Mabrey then escalated things by shoving Clark to the ground.
In the final seconds, Cunningham delivered a hard foul on Sheldon during a fast break, sparking another confrontation. Cunningham, Sheldon, and Sun guard Lindsay Allen were all ejected.
New footage has since surfaced, showing a more intense view of Mabrey’s shove. Though Clark downplayed the drama after the game, debate continues over whether the WNBA’s response was sufficient.
