[Saba Sports News] With the upcoming F1 technical regulations in 2026, Red Bull faces an unprecedented challenge: not only must they build their own engine, but they must also retain their key driver, Max Verstappen. Team principal Christian Horner admitted at the British Grand Prix that the Red Bull-Ford power unit may not be competitive enough against Mercedes in the short term, reviving rumors about Verstappen’s future. Although Verstappen’s contract runs until 2028, it includes a clause allowing him to leave if his performance doesn’t meet expectations. It is reported that if he finishes below fourth in the driver standings before the summer break, he could activate the exit clause. Recent rumors suggest that Mercedes has already reached a near agreement with the four-time F1 champion for the 2026 season, pending board approval. When asked what impact Verstappen’s potential departure would have, Horner did not deny his importance, stating that Verstappen is the foundation of the team, but no one is permanent. Just like how Sebastian Vettel left in 2014, the team has already prepared for such a scenario.
