[Saba Sports News] Recently, Liverpool announced that they will permanently retire the number 20 jersey across all levels of the club in honor of Diogo Jota. In their statement, Liverpool said: “This is the number he proudly wore and brought us countless victories—Diogo Jota will forever be Liverpool’s number 20.” After consulting with his wife Rute Cardoso and family, the club announced that the number will be retired at all levels, including Liverpool Women and the academy, to honor and remember Diogo. This move not only recognizes the immeasurable contributions the Portuguese player made to the team’s achievements over the past five years, but also honors the deep impact he had on his teammates, colleagues, and fans, as well as the lasting bonds he created with them. Jota passed away on August 3rd in Spain due to a car accident, just 28 years old, along with his brother Andre Silva, who was also involved in the incident. It is reported that Liverpool will cover the remaining two years of Jota’s contract salary and pay it to his family. Jota played for Feira, Porto, Wolves, and Liverpool. He joined Liverpool from Wolves in September 2020 and made 182 appearances for the Reds, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists.
