[Saba Sports News] On July 8, the Japanese women’s doubles pair Matsuyama Nami and Shida Chiharu officially split up. They had been together up until the 2024 World Badminton Championships in August. Starting in September, Shida Chiharu will partner with Higashino Arisa, beginning a new Olympic cycle with the goal of becoming the number one women’s doubles pair. Many fans thought that Matsuyama Nami was abandoned due to injuries and other reasons, but this isn’t the case. After the Paris Olympics, both Matsuyama and Shida changed their mindset and goals. Matsuyama had considered quitting multiple times but was convinced to stay. She continuously adjusted herself, which led to internal struggles. In fact, the decision to end their partnership after the World Championships was made as early as April. As for Shida and Higashino pairing up, it was Shida who approached Higashino directly, as they have similar goals. Matsuyama stated that in women’s doubles, she gave her all, but she can no longer break through or exceed herself in terms of ability, body, technique, or mental strength. Therefore, she decided to try mixed doubles instead, though her partner is still undecided. From the registration list for the national badminton tournament in Japan, Matsuyama will partner with Nakashizu Yuto in mixed doubles. This may be the new attempt she mentioned, and the results will determine whether she continues her sports career.
