Southampton was relegated from the Premier League last season with the worst record. For a relegation side, whether it can retain its key players will directly determine its strength in the EFL Championship. According to current transfer information, Southampton has kept more than half of its key players. These include 19-year-old promising winger Tyler Dibling, the highest-valued player in the squad, who previously represented the England U17 national team at the U17 World Cup. Also included are center-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who started 32 matches last season; midfielder Mateus Fernandes, who started 34 games and is known as a versatile player; defensive midfielder Flynn Downes, who played 25 times; defender Yukinari Sugawara, who played 30 times; striker Cameron Archer, who made 35 appearances; and forward Adam Armstrong, who started 15 matches. From the pre-season preparations, the team looks strong, scoring in all five friendly matches, including against top-tier clubs like Espanyol and Brighton.
Wrexham is the oldest professional football club in Wales. It became an “internet sensation” after being acquired by actor Ryan Reynolds, known for his role in the movie Deadpool. From the 22-23 season, when they were promoted to League Two, to the 23-24 season, when they moved up to League One, and then to the 24-25 season, where they were promoted to the EFL Championship, Wrexham achieved a three-level promotion in three years, becoming the first team in the history of the English football league system to be promoted three consecutive seasons across the top five divisions. Wrexham’s success is closely tied to smart transfers. Last season, the club signed forward Sam Smith and two experienced Championship players: former England international Jay Rodriguez and Hull City winger Ryan Longman. The three quickly secured starting positions, contributing double-digit goals and assists, becoming key drivers in their promotion. After moving to the Championship, the club increased investment, spending 9.33 million euros on new signings, including forward Kieffer Moore, who helped Sheffield United reach the promotion playoff final last season; Ryan Hardie, who scored 10 goals and provided three assists for Plymouth Argyle; and Josh Windass, who contributed 13 goals and five assists for Wednesday. It’s clear that Wrexham plans to follow the same transfer strategy as last season, aiming to establish itself in the Championship with an attacking style of play.
In terms of squad value, Southampton is the second-highest in the league, valued at 202 million euros, while Wrexham is the fourth-lowest, at just 28.7 million euros. There is a clear gap in quality between the two teams. In terms of Championship experience, Southampton is a regular in the Premier League and Championship, excelling in crucial matches, while Wrexham is making its debut in the Championship. Whether in terms of strength or experience, Southampton holds a clear advantage. At their first home game of the season, they will surely not miss the chance to take all three points.
