Their strong bond was highlighted when they both retired from international cricket on the same day, August 15, 2020, surprising their fans. Dhoni continues to play in the IPL and lead his team, while Raina has moved on to commentary and cricket analysis after stepping back from the IPL. A viral video recently surfaced where Raina shared a funny story about attending Dhoni’s wedding in 2010 to Sakshi Singh Rawat in Dehradun.
Raina humorously recounted how Dhoni invited him secretly to the wedding and he ended up wearing Dhoni’s clothes at the event.
“Unhone phone kiya, bola, ‘kahan ho?’ Maine bola, ‘hum toh Lucknow mein hai’. ‘Phir vo bole ‘Keh rahe hai, meri shaadi hai Dehradun mein aaja, silent aana, kisiko batana nahi. Main wait kar raha hu tera, (He had called me and asked me, ‘Where are you?’. I said I am in Lucknow. ‘I am getting married in Dehradun. Don’t tell anyone and come silently, I am waiting for you),” Raina recalled. “To main normal kapdon mein gaya tha, phir main unki hi shaadi mein, unhi ke kapdey pehne Maine (So, I went wearing my normal clothes and I was at his wedding, wearing his clothes),” he added.
In another viral video, Dhoni, seen playing pickleball with Rishabh Pant in Dubai, spoke about his post-cricket plans. The video emerged shortly after the IPL 2024 auction in UAE. Dhoni expressed his desire to dedicate more time to the Indian Army, a commitment he hasn’t been able to fulfill in recent years due to his cricket career.
