[Saba Sports News] South Korean badminton star Chae Yu-jung recently announced her retirement. However, her reason for retiring has left the public disappointed – she is stepping away due to a new national team rule requiring mixed doubles players to also compete in women’s doubles. The Korean Badminton Association’s selection system has long been problematic, and Chae Yu-jung’s retirement is, in fact, a protest against this unreasonable system. Although the association hastily held a press conference after her retirement, announcing the establishment of an independent selection pathway for mixed doubles, holding a retirement ceremony for Chae Yu-jung at this point inevitably gives the impression of a “belated remedy.” The editorial believes that Chae Yu-jung’s retirement exposes deep-seated issues in the Korean Badminton Association’s athlete development and management. Merely holding a retirement ceremony cannot fully dispel public doubts and controversies surrounding its system. To truly resolve the problem, the Korean Badminton Association must fundamentally change its approach to athletes, establish a more scientific, reasonable, and humane selection and development mechanism, and prevent similar incidents from recurring in the future.
