[Saba Sports News] At the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Penang Badminton Association (PBA) in Malaysia, Malaysian Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh was in attendance. During the dinner, she announced a grant of RM38,000 from the Sports Ministry to the PBA, which was met with cheers from the members present. This funding aims to assist the PBA in cultivating more top-tier badminton talents, similar to outstanding players like Lee Chong Wei. The PBA also plans to establish a badminton academy in Northern Malaysia to complement the talent development system of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in Kuala Lumpur, and this grant will also support the preparations for this academy. In our opinion, while RM38,000 may not seem like a particularly large amount, considering the current state of badminton development in Malaysia and the special status of the PBA, this move holds both symbolic significance and practical value. It positively impacts the development of state-level badminton associations, the national badminton talent pool, and even the broader sports ecosystem. The Penang Badminton Association is the oldest state-level badminton association in Malaysia. It not only laid the foundation for the establishment of the Badminton Association of Malaysia but has also long been responsible for local badminton talent development, tournament organization, and promoting the sport.
