[Saba Sports News] According to Spanish media reports, on February 7, badminton women’s singles star Carolina Marín underwent partial meniscectomy on the inner and outer meniscus of her right knee. The surgery was very successful, and doctors expect a recovery period of six weeks. Marín expressed a strong desire to participate in the European Championship badminton individual event to be held in Huelva, Spain, in September, setting this as her goal to return to the court. According to the plan, Marín will officially retire after the European Championship. In response, the president of the Spanish Badminton Federation stated that Marín is the best ambassador for the city of Huelva, and there will certainly be a proper farewell ceremony for her retirement.
Information shows that Marín is the most accomplished women’s singles player in badminton today, with three World Championship gold medals (2014, 2015, and 2018) and seven European Championship gold medals (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022, and 2024). She is also the gold medalist in women’s singles at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Although Marín shared training photos last year and announced her intention to return at the 2026 European Championships, the 32-year-old has struggled to maintain competitiveness after suffering two significant injuries.
