[Saba Sports News] The High Court judge has ordered the FIA, Bernard Charles Ecclestone, and F1 Management to pay Felipe Massa £250,000 in legal costs to compensate for his losses in the ongoing legal dispute. In November last year, the court ruled that the former F1 driver’s lawsuit against the defendants could proceed to trial. He had previously filed a lawsuit concerning the ‘Crashgate’ scandal that occurred during the 2008 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix. The court ruled that Massa could seek compensation for the disputed incident but dismissed his request for the court to declare that he should have won the 2008 driver’s championship. A court order revealed by Sky Sports showed that the judge approved part of the defendants’ application and confirmed that an important legal issue in the case should be directly submitted for the Supreme Court’s ruling. The defendants have 14 days to pay the legal costs.
The editor believes that the finality of sporting results should be respected, especially in cases where events have concluded many years ago and the championship has been officially awarded. However, this case serves as a warning for the governance of F1 and other sports: if governing bodies conceal violations for an extended period, they may face subsequent legal risks, even if they cannot change historical results.
